The theater reopened as a performing arts venue in 1977 with the help of the Nederlander Organization, who now owns the theater today. Pacific Theatres gained ownership of the venue in 1965, keeping it as a movie theater until closing it in 1977. The theater was notably the host of the Academy Award Ceremonies from 1949 to 1959.
Following the sale of the venue to Fox West Coast Theaters in 1932, businessman Howard Hughes in turn purchased the theater for the RKO Theatre Circuit in 1949. Though originally intended to host vaudeville shows and films, it became a movie theater during the Great Depression. The theater was built at Hollywood and Vine in 1930 for Alexander Pantages’ vaudeville theatre circuit and designed in Art Deco style by B.
